Started reading this for a book club, and it makes surprisingly good bus reading. I can't read more than five or ten pages at a time, but when I'm drowsing on the bus in the morning, it's great to have something that goes from a recitation of various rivers to talking about that monastery with a lake that only produces fish during lent. It keeps me on my toes.

I’m a bit surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It’s easy to read and not always descriptive but it does relate what was important to a traveler at the time: religion, distances, and trade. The anecdotes of different rulers added flavor to the book. I do wish the endnotes had been chapter end notes as opposed to at the end end notes, but even flipping back and forth as I read wasn’t too intrusive. I was completely surprised at how widely Polo traveler though; he went to the east coast of Africa as well which I didn’t realize.
