Turgenev was clearly a particularly astute observer of the human condition. This novel is so universal I can't imagine a human anywhere on Earth, or during any time period, not being able to relate to it. Fathers and Sons is about relationships, and especially about the relationships between generations. Bazarov and Arkady are young men just done with college who come home with big ideas about the world, they clash with their fathers and uncle who they see as hopelessly old fashioned and irrelevant. Of course the older men disagree and are a little bit alarmed to find themselves no longer on the cutting edge of thought and style.
