Set in the same world as Kingdom of Lies but can be read as a standalone series. The story follows a Madinia who is charged with safeguarding a powerful grimoire while being relentlessly hunted by its original owner who happens to be a vengeful god determined to reclaim his ancient power and settle an age-old grudge.

Wow. Stacia Stark knows how to write captivating stories. I loved the Kingdom of Lies series and Madiniaโs character in that series, so I was excited to read her journey in This Vicious Dream. I was glued to the page to find out whether the grimoire will change Calysian, who Eamonn is (shifter), and if our FMC and MMC would finally come together. I loved seeing some of the characters from Kingdom of Lies in this duology. It was like a warm hug because I already knew them.
Madinia and Calysian had amazing chemistry that builds so nicely. They are on a perilous journey the entire time of the book and I ate it up. Madinia is just so independent and strong-willed yet flawed which makes her so relatable and a character to root for. The banter and yearning are top notch.

This book is hands down my favorite of the Stacia Stark books Iโve read so far. I have read the Kingdom of Lies series already and I would say it would likely be very helpful to read it prior to reading this series or you may be lost about some things. Loved the tension between the FMC Madinia and MMC Calysian. Their dynamic was awesome. The characters were very well defined, the plot was very unique (with twists I wasnโt expecting!), and the spice helped advance the plot. I highly recommend and canโt wait for the sequel!

Set in the same world as Stacia Stark's Kingdom of Lies, This Vicious Dream is the first in the Kingdom of Death duology. We meet Madinia and Calysian and are treated to a great duet narration for the audiobook by Meg Sylvan and Tim Paige. Starting off with some Rapunzel vibes as Madinia has been imprisoned in a tower surrounded by thorns as she refused to give up the knowledge of a grimoire sought by those who would take its power. Madinia is rescued by Calysian and together they form a temporary alliance as they both work to restore their memories.
I enjoy Stacia Stark's writing quite a bit and who doesn't love a morally grey MMC with a saucy FMC? On the other hand, I had trouble with world building and didn't get a great sense of place. There were references to the characters being different sport of beings, but I wasn't completely sure how that influenced interactions and the general world. I also didn't get a great sense of why everyone lost memories and what would have happened within the world to start that.
I did enjoy the narration quite a bit, but my one gripe is that when Madinia had flashbacks, it was really hard to tell as a listener since there wasn't much indication so all of a sudden you'd be in a different timeline than you started in.
Overall, if you want a fun read you can escape in, this would definitely be for you - it didn't quite work for me, but I for sure see the appeal! Thanks so much to Dreamscape Media and to NetGalley for the advanced listening copy.

I was provided an audio of This Vicious Dream through Netgalley and Dreamscape media
I was really excited to get more Medinia and Calysians story! this could be it's own book series but i would recommend starting with Kingdom of Lies. This story picks up 3 years after the war.
Medinia is being held captive because of her knowledge of the grimoire to reshape the world. Calysian "rescues" her only to make her his captive as he is seeking the grimoires as well.
book 1 held a lot of promise. I really enjoyed getting to know both characters and I can't wait to see where this story goes and what others of Medinia's friends from Kingdom of Lies will play a part.

Fast. Easy going.
And WTH moments.
When you think you know whatโs going on and going to happen, just think again!
The big reveals were some freaking big reveals.
Give me book two already! Haha.
