Rachel Lacey has crafted an extraordinary tale to kick off the Midnight in Manhattan series. Marketing expert, Eve Marlow’s show Do Over is in need of a ratings boost and she has no idea when she finds a litter of abandoned kittens in a garbage can that meeting Josie Swanson, kitten rescuer and bar owner, would change the course of her life forever.

Josie Swanson’s bar which has been in her family for generations is struggling. When Eve Marlow steps into her bar with a litter of abandoned kittens, Josie not only helps Eve save the kittens but also throws down the gauntlet and begs Eve to do over her bar.

I absolutely love Eve! She has walls upon walls up around her and Josie’s mixture of patience and probing slowly begins to break down those walls. She tries so hard to portray an air of indifference but underneath she’s a big softy. Despite the traumas she endured, she persevered. Her strength and resilience are admirable and I just want to give her a hug.

Josie is an absolute sweetheart. Her loyalty to her family’s business and her drive to rescue helpless kittens make her a lovely human. Eve tries really hard to resist the pull toward Josie and fortunately for us readers, she can only resist for so long. Their chemistry is so delicious and their conversations are so emotional and heartfelt.

Lori Prince is the perfect narrator for this book. Her ability to take Rachel Lacey’s brilliant writing and bring the story to life is incredible. Her inflections and intonations are spot on and I am in awe of her ability to infuse so much emotion into the scenes. I honestly teared up several times during my listen due to the depth of emotion Lori Prince portrayed.

Don’t Cry For Me by Rachel Lacey is a beautifully written, emotional journey with two incredible main characters, a litter of adorable kittens, and a bar I’d love to visit. Highly recommended!

I received a copy of the audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Eve was infuriating but it made sense why. She lost her wife and their daughter in one night after a drunk driver hit them. But Josie is exactly what Eve needed and vice versa. The way their love for each other quickly flourished and they both knew it even though they agreed to being “casually exclusive,” fancy for being in a relationship. I’m not surprised that the new bartender stole from Josie, and Eve was right: Josie was too trusting where she needed to be more cautious. Adam definitely is a the kind of friend we all want, the way he stood up to Eve but went about it the wrong way. I’m glad Eve called Regina and heard about her being remarried with two kids, which showed Eve that she could move on and love again after Lisa. And the kittens!!!! I’m not an animal person, but I thought this was such a huge part of the story. They played a huge role. I was ready a Rachel Lacey fan, but now even more so.

The more Rachel Lacey books I read…the more I want to read! Don’t Cry for Me was SO GOOD! Eve is a frosty, closed off woman…but she has her reasons and they are BIG reasons. My heart ached for both Eve and Josie throughout the story at the losses they have faced and their ongoing struggles with grief, among layers of other emotions and challenges. But their chemistry jumped off the pages (or out the speakers, in my case) from the moment they met. And when they finally let that chemistry turn into action…
