I thought the themes of this book were interesting but I thought it was a bit disjointed at points and the scenes with Mustafa in London weren't great to read. I probably would have benefitted from studying the book as opposed to reading it. The best bits were when we were with the main character or the grandfather and other old people, I really liked Bint Majzoub. The final chapter was brilliant!

Really interesting book. I really like the Othello vibes, except it's not Othello at all. I would absolutely recommend it to everyone. It's a really interesting read and will make you think about all the hidden meanings for at least a week.

I didn’t like this.

It was interesting however, to see sexuality written & portrayed in this book by (presumably) a muslim author - particularly when considering Islamic beliefs surrounding modesty, in contrast to the actions of Wad Rayyes & co.

For the most part it’s beautifully written, albeit some scenes confronting (particularly that with Wad Rayyes & Houda I believe her name was) - which I am now scarred by.

+ it was sickening to read about Mustafa Sa’eed and the things he’d done to numerous women despite ‘not being a threat’.

I think this book is really thought provoking and raises some really good questions about culture, race & fetishization, and the gender issue.
As a woman tbh it was kind of hard to read just like the language and the men’s discourse around women just made me sad but that’s pretty much the point of the book.
Definitely no realistic women in this and no women acting independently of men, but i understand that that’s a literary tool for the message.

Honestly I feel like I wasn’t smart enough for this book. It was beautifully written, even in translation, and at times it felt like a fever dream. I think it’s an excellent book. It’s complex, engrossing, and certainly deserves its reputation as a classic. However, it was not a book I especially enjoyed on a personal level.
