3 stars. Tandem read with audio and this narrator was also fantastic!
Honestly, this book needed a major rework. Was it quick (well if I hadn't gotten sidetracked by Life:tm:) and easy, yeah. It is something to throw on in the background when you want something low effort with a dash of pirates and adventure. That is what made the first two so consumable. I expected the same thing with this one but then the plot got bonkers and threw off the whole book.
First, I'll start with the romance. From a distance in the first two installments I was definitely shipping Sorinda and Kearan. Up close and personal? No chemistry. Absolutely NONE. Something was just off about it and their whole relationship arc. And then the last 50% threw in the King of the Undersea plot to do this not quite a love triangle thing but kinda was one and I can't even emphasize how bizarre it was and how much it just detracted from the main romance as well as the book as a whole. Which leads me to my next point.
The King of the Undersea plot is actually a cool plot point BUT for this book it needed to have happened SOONER and there needed to be more build up with it. Like, they could've gotten stranded there because of the battle with the sea creature (honestly saw no point in the guardians that were there), she accidently wakes up the King of the Undersea while ended up connected with him/magical object, and then has to spend after that wrestling back control of the situation and her growing feelings for Kearan. Boom, bam, done. Much more interesting and doesn't come with the halfway through book plot change that makes no sense. Also the King of the Undersea can cook and wasn't written like a cardboard cutout sooooo I'll be choosing to be Queen of the Undersea thanks.
The last thing was just Sorinda's character arc, it was messy. A FIVE YEAR OLD wouldn't have been able to 1) survive for weeks on the streets following the man that killed her family unseen 2) sneak into said man's house let alone bedroom and then 3) proceed to slit his throat and kill him in one go. Like I know these whole books are just thinly veiled revenge fantasies and all these characters can do amazing feats that aren't really possible but that one takes the pale. It needed to be at least slightly believable and if she had been around 10, I wouldn't have batted an eye. It would've made the nature of her character arc more relatable and make sense.
Either way I sense another spin off coming with the other Pirate Queen gals, it was clearly setting it up for one, and I'll be reading that when I need something quick and consumable. This one was just a bad entry in the franchise.

I’m still kind of gathering my thoughts about this book.
I didn’t enjoy the romance.
I didn’t enjoy Sorinda(only the first part we’re she silently kills almost everybody)
I did enjoy the weird sea-creature and the overpowered guy (forgot his name and the name of the artifact) .
I don’t know, I liked how engaging the story was. Everytime I read a book in this series I want to keep reading. But at the same time I really really hated the sincere typical sentences, for example: it’s okay to be vulnerable (even though I’m not certain that this was said but it might as well have been). I, no exaggeration, rolled my eyes about TWENTY TIMES whilst reading this book because of all these clichés.
However if there is to be another book in the series, yes, I would read it, yes
