"You can't be afraid of the dark when you're the monster lurking in the shadows."
Going into this book, I was unsure if I'd truly like it. I have been waiting for more Alosa, so I was shocked when I found out this one was about Sorinda. Though Alosa played parts in it, it was Sorinda's story. I'm so glad I picked it up. Sorinda was everything I expected and more. Her story was heartbreaking, frustrating, and bad ass. She is amazing.
"I like to hide. I like to be Unseen. I don't want people thinking about me at all. But Kearan? He sees me. He always seems to find where I'm hiding."
"Have you considered that maybe it's time for you to stop hiding?"
"Guilty is healthy when it makes us do better, but don't let it consume you."
"You are the best parts of me. Mandsy, you are my mercy. Niridia, you are my justice. And you, Sorinda. You are my vengeance. "
The first thing I love about this book was the friendship and trust Alosa and her top 3 girls had for each other. I got the feeling in the other books that Sorinda didn't have many she could lean on and trust. It's nice to see that she had Alosa and the other 3. Alosa is able to tell Sorinda what she needs to hear, and Sorinda, Niridia, and Mandsy keep Alosa in line, too.
Another aspect of the book I loved so much is the banter between Kearan and Sorinda. Their back and forth makes my day when I read it. I laugh so hard because Kearan riles her up, and Sorinda takes the bait!
"You can feel joy and pain at the same time, just like you can want to be here and be somewhere else at the same time."
"Dying isn't so scary. It's living that's hard."
Kearan is perfection! I hated him in book 1 because I thought he was useless and horrible. Grew to love him in book 2. And I adore him now in book 3! He's wise and gentle when he needs to be, but he also knows when he needs to step up and be harsh.
Sorinda and Kearan grew so much throughout the story. Though it was theirs, there was a lot of growth with the other characters. Roslyn grew. Alosa grew as a queen. The Drifta grew as a people. The changes made were all for the better. Understanding, trust, and communication were so important to the book. I love the changes made, especially in Sorinda.
"You can't be afraid of the dark when you're the light keeping the shadows at bay."
