An absolutely excellent book, and all the more so for its content and the time in which it was written. The prose and imagery is very good and the author’s personal style comes through, and of course the story is excellent as well. A very real depiction of the confusion and sacrifices that that kind of relationship would have involved at that time.

I can why it's a classic. Took me a while to read it however. I think it was a good book to end the year on though.

I would really give this book a 4.5- not quite a 5 because although I enjoyed it, it was a bit less plot-driven than I like and sometimes waxed poetic more than I thought necessary. I did really like it though because besides mentioning New Jersey and people named Abbey (spelled incorrectly but I digress) frequently, it also was a lesbian love story with a mostly happy ending, which I can't say I was expecting. Plus, it was written by a lesbian and published in the 1950s, which is no small feat and I appreciate the history of that and what this book must have meant to so many people at that time. Now I guess I need to watch the movie!
