Als Vorreiter der queeren Literatur natürlich bemerkenswert für seine Zeit, dennoch habe ich die Dynamik der Charaktere als äußerst merkwürdig und trostlos empfunden. Eine Art erotisierte Mutter - Tochter - Beziehung, nicht wegen des Altersunterschieds, sondern der hierarchischen und manipulativen Atmosphäre.

A surprisingly immersive study of infatuation verging on obsession, painted with exhilaration and despair in equal measure. My favourite things about it are vivid descriptions of characters and the ease with which different moods the author evokes, from the elation of falling in love, through hopelessness and numbness, hate and envy, to the dread of the impending doom. The strong cast consists of such small number of characters it would lend nicely to a stage adaptation. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie!
