I had to debate what to give this, 2 or 3 stars. If I could have done 2.5 I would have. Ultimately, I found this book to be DULL. However, I’m reading it in 2023, and it was written in the early 1950s. It was probably quite controversial for it’s time. But, man, it was mundane. I struggled to get through it, and I honestly hated Carol. She just seemed so…self-absorbed and narcissistic. And then, I think that’s also partly the point of the book. I don’t know, but lesbians are normal people who live normal lives (besides they somehow have the ability to take long road trips and not worry frivolously about where money comes from in this book). It just really does not make for an entertaining read for me. So I think the book comes out and accomplishes SOMETHING, that something just is not for me.
Very interesting. I'm not saying I liked the movie better, but the movie was the short story version of this book. It was really interesting to get Therese inner thoughts, something not available in the movie. Glad I read it.

Patricia Highsmith is an absolute legend.
A+ content. A quick read because I couldn’t bear to put it down.

Highsmith’s ability to get at the changing feelings involved in love is astonishing. It’s no surprise that Carol and Therese feels so real as Highsmith apparently used some autobiography in this novel, which makes the cutting sections all the more impressive. Amazing!
Better than the movie Carol, which was made from it. And the movie was a pleasure.
Started off a little slow with rather flat character development, but by the end I couldn't put it down.

The amount of times they “grab a bite” in this book is ridiculous. It felt like it was all telling, no showing. Pretty boring. Didn’t root for either of them.
