This book broke my heart because I expected so much to enjoy it way more.
I think, and I can't believe I'm saying this, that it'll make a way better film than a book.

First of all, I understand that this is basically love at first side, but goodness, these characters might love each other but I don't feel like they like each other. They spend so much time refusing each other and bringing each other down that I can't believe their feelings. And it totally feels like they're both unbalanced, not because there are queer, clearly I wouldn't care about that, but because of their reactions to life.

Therese is an over-dramatic teenager, that's what she is. Everything is life or death. I couldn't sympathize with her.

The last third of the book was a different matter. But you need to go through 2/3 first, and then be like "if I cared about these characters this last third would be really interesting."

But since I wasn't invested in them, I didn't hurt with them or was happy for them when appropriate.

I can absolutely appreciate how groundbreaking this book was with its themes, but was it that loved because there was no alternative to LGBTQ stories with a positive outcome, or did I just miss something?

I'll say this - my best friend loves it and she now hates me a bit. I'm still very curious to see Carol though.

Honestly, I tried very hard to like this book. I've heard how phenomenal it was and I was excited to start it. But let me tell you, it was a slow start. Despite this being a very short book it took me almost a full month to finish just because it was so boring. Nothing at all happened in this book until the last five chapters - the book mainly consisted of the two main characters drinking and going to restaurants/hotels.

Additionally, the two main characters were incredibly boring themselves. They had no real personalities except the younger one, Therese, being obsessed with the older woman Carol even though she knows nothing about her. It seemed to me that Highsmith tried making Carol seem mysterious and alluring but instead she just seemed flat and transparent. Therese herself was hard to like based off of her childish and sometimes dramatic inner monologues that detailed her rapidly swinging emotions. All in all, I would say if you choose not to read this book you are not missing out on anything special.

Qué increíble viaje fue leer la historia de Therese y Carol y y cómo se fue desarrollando el amor entre ambas. Pero, aunque tiene un ritmo lento, creo que lo que más me gustó de todo fue la narración de Patricia Highsmith.
