So I'm not AS disappointed in this as The Other Two Queer Books I Read This Year - there were surprisingly lots of intensely gay™ moments in this book that I just adored. That little scene where Therese drinks Carol's coffee, making sure to sip from where Carol's lipstick smear was?? I felt Sappho herself descend into my phone. But it is, when you boil it down, really a love-at-first-sight kinda romance, which I've never been a fan of.
Also, Carol's a little too moody, distant, and patronizing for my taste. We ain't takin' this shit in a romance from a man, so we ain't takin' it from a lady, either. Gender equality, lads. She keeps bringing up how young Therese is - everyone does, actually, which is a wild experience to have when I'm exactly her age - and having your secret gf call you practically a child, POST-COITUS, is kinda uhhhhh
Also everything after the road trip drags. Nice ending, though, I guess.

I guess that I had a difficult time relating to the time period and the way that society was so against gay/lesbians. I know that so many had to hide relationships and feelings but I could not really get a feel for the time period from this book. Therese was immature and Carol was selfish.

Happy endings in queer stories are so rare and I’m so glad this book defied that mold. This is a quentessential and important example of hopeful endings in queer historical fiction. It just shows you can get all the angst, longing and drama into a story without killing off characters or ending it in a tragic way. More of this is needed in queer literature! Viva la queer joy!
