May mắn khi đọc câu chuyện này vào tầm Noel và năm mới đúng y như thời gian trong chuyện. Nói là câu chuyện vì nó khá ngắn. Đó chỉ là một khoảng thời gian ngắn nhưng lại sinh ra trong nó một mối tình lạ lẫm, mới mẻ và bất ngờ. Nó cũng kể về câu chuyện tìm lại chính mình của cả hai nhân vật. Một cô gái 19 tuổi không gia đình, tìm thấy bản thân trước những dự định còn dang dở. Một phụ nữ đã có gia đình tìm thấy bản thân sau cuộc ly hôn khó khăn để giành quyền nuôi con.

Es uno de esos casos en que tiene gran valor el impacto que el libro causó en su momento, el de la 1ra publicación. Para entonces, la mayoría de las obras con representatividad queer lapidaban a los amantes con algún destino trágico (sida, suicidio, etc.). Patricia rompe con este pesimismo y pretende construir una obra con un "final feliz". Cuestión que marcó de forma signiticativa a una buena porción de lectoras(es) de la comunidad.
No sé si se trate de que con los años, mucho de su encanto, dictado precisamente por lo anterior, se haya ido diluyendo, pero es que no he logrado generar una conexión con la historia que se desenvuelve. Es probable que me haya distanciado de los personajes al encontrarles ciertos defectos dables de antipatía o por haberme hallado ante una narración, diría, carente de dinamismo.
Si bien la construcción del entorno de la pareja es formidale, aún hay ciertos personajes que, a pesar de ser mencionados de forma recurrente ㅡlo que, por lo tanto, los erige como “relevantes” para al menos una de las mujeresㅡ, se caracterizan por su presencia escurridiza o ¡por completo nula! Incluso tratándose de quien le da el nombre a la novela: por momentos parece desdibujarse bajo la mirada de Therese, quien, por lo visto, la ha idealizado; lo que deja al lector con la sensación de nunca haber conocido al personaje “real".
No le doy menos estrellas porque mi opinión no anula la huella que hubieron dejado las primeras impresiones que instó en el siglo XX, con las que esperanzó a toda una generación de disidencias.

I'm a big fan of The Talented Mr Ripley, and I've always found that (even tho he is a murderer) there is something very innocent and pure about the way Highsmith writes queer love. Because all love in its truest form is pure.
The Price of Salt was an even more refined version of this. It's hard to separate this from the cultural context of what it would've meant as a queer person to read this in the 50s because it is of its time, but aside from that, it's just a very beautiful romance. The way Therese felt about Carol was visceral and touching to anyone who has experienced a crush that's winded them.

I loved this book. The vague confusion some of the characters experienced about other people and even themselves, while others had staunchly arbitrary judgement at their disposal, made the reality of close human relations palpable. I love that this book is a love story that takes you through the love sickness, the feeling of having the magic gone, and then the realization that even without the magic, there is still love. I thought the grieving that Therese (the main character) went through towards the end was really well written. I could feel it all along with her - the losing of herself to the grief and obsession followed quickly by the strength and vitality of her inner ego - and back again. I love that she was able to come back to the relationship after all her grief, after finding herself again, and after finding that once she had found herself, she still had the love - she was able to CHOOSE the relationship and choose it with a clear head.
