A beautifully written story about first love. Therese and Carol are characters you would remember. In a way, the novel in a ode to Carol and I am glad the movie from this was so well made and aptly titled Carol. The novel is from Therese's perspective, but it feels like the protagonist of the novel is Carol.

*spoilers ahead*

I loved that this was one of the first queer novels written with a happy ending. The time in which this came out was pre-Stonewall and I can only imagine the impact this novel would have had on the LGBTQIA+ community back then. Therese's infatuation with Carol is captured captivatingly. I loved that there was a character arc to her relationship with Carol within her arc. She transforms from a girl into a woman even as her obsession with Carol matures into love.

I am glad this novel is finally being recognized for the classic that it is.

A solid read and very literary. It just dragged in parts, but the insight into same sex loving characters of the past was extraordinary.

A compelling and elegantly-written tale about clandestine love in a patriarchal society. Therese is a lively protagonist and Carol is appropriately complex and mysterious. Highsmith writes some great prose--will definitely be checking out more of her work in the future.
