3.5 stars - It was an okay story. Some parts I really enjoyed like the meet cute, the confession, and the ending. Some parts were just repetitive and drawn out. Sometimes the characters were a bit dull and seemed emotionally distant with their feelings. Would have loved a bit more yearning, honesty, and vulnerability between the main characters.

*update: Watched the movie Carol, which is based on this book, and it brings all the emotion and yearning I wanted in the book.

There's a lot in here I like. I enjoyed the general tone, the way setting was handled, the realism (the characters stopped to eat), and the relatability present in several sections.

Wow. I have enjoyed Highsmith's writing ever since I read The Talented Mr. Ripley, but Carol was so much better! It's not really a psychological thriller but it kept me on the edge of my seat like a good thriller would. So intense! And Carol... What a woman.

perfect.

So that was the great lesbian classic? I get understatement and restraint, but this book was so lifeless I had to force myself through it. (It was for a book club, so no DNF.)

tense slow-paced

i have seen so many dismissals of this book, and the movie that’s based on it, to the point that i had such minimal expectations. this book is beautiful and devastating and such an important story in it’s time. i truly believe i will think about it for years.
from now on i create my own judgements for lesbian stories because i’m so sad that i never gave this a chance earlier.
