I really liked this book, but after talking to a friend of mine who had some gripes, I am definitely thinking on its portrayal of lesbianism and the harm that the story might bring. I did love the writing, I found it very moving, and I think for 1952 this novel is revolutionary. But perhaps my opinion will change as I read more about the novel and when I finally watch the movie "Carol."

What to say about this book. Highsmith is in my opinion someone who can say so much in a very short space and still evoke feeling of either sympathy, anger, indifference or what the scene needs and to me that says it all. This is a road trip about 2 women who see the world differently but both want the same from each other in ways society won’t let them. I think people on here who speak in the negative about it are maybe missing the point or forget this was written in time when this wasn’t accepted and Highsmith in 1989 writes an afterword about this and again sums up perfectly. Also she says at the end this is a book that is full of hope and joy for our characters and for the future in general. We still have a way to go but in essence this book says a lot and speaks to many.
