The era was captured really well, and after reading this I can see that the movie stayed pretty true to the book. It also felt much more modern than I had expected considering it was published in 1952!

Oh, I don't know how to word my feelings. For the whole book, it is hard not to root for Carol and Therese to be together. Being a lesbian, especially in 1950s, is/was difficult and can be exhausting. It made me feel grateful for everything our ancestors fought for. Even though it was hard to sympathize with Therese (I personally found her unlikable), it was still heart wrenching to see her relationships with men close to her and intriguing to watch her navigate her confidence and attraction to women. It was hard to see Carol's battle with Harge for Rindy.
The relationship between Carol and Therese felt special to read.. Almost like a relationship between a mother and daughter symbolically due to their losses. Carol's assertiveness to Therese reminded me of what the latter missed out on as a child and the same with Carol when it comes to being loved to the point it's may be a fault. I can go on and on. I will say though, the last page is my favorite to read since it was beautifully written.

The book Carol is based on, it is incredibly compelling and so bold for its time.
Although I applaud the topic of this novel, and for its time, a happy ending was a first, I still found it was quite difficult to get through.
I didn't like Therese very much, so inarticulate, with lots of sentences incomplete. Maybe this was the author's attempt to make her sound naive or young, but it served only to make her sound unintelligent and two-dimensional.
I didn't enjoy Highsmith's writing style, very choppy and unclear, so that I had to go back and reread to make sense of things.
Also, the heavy, slow pace and to me, artificial happiness of the characters contributed to the feeling of unreality, flightiness instead of the depth which I believe was being sought.
Danny was the most likeable character, in fact. Therese, portrayed as an artist, was too weak and unseeing to be believable. Carol at least was strong, but again, not likeable in the way she treated Therese for the most part.
I read through to the happy ending, but it was unsatisfying and as fluffy as the rest of the book.

It feels like a hate crime giving this book 3 stars but I was BBBBBOOOOOOOORRED
