I just know this book would've changed my life had I been alive when it first came out. Still, I loved every second of it now.
Therese's obsessive personality was so interesting especially compared to the way Carol is portrayed. Home girl fell first, harder, and to a crazier level and I respect that. I really appreciated the times it was insinuated, between the lines and silences, what was truly going on between the women which added such a closeness to the narration that I feel the women who enjoyed this book first could truly understand and relate to.
I genuinely think this is an extraordinary book that honestly deserves the classic title. I don't think there's a single lesbian that doesn't know about it.

Definitely a book of its time when describing minority characters. It didn’t read like a love story to me. It was more of a young, sad, hurt woman who is trying to find a replacement mother and ends up in a toxic relationship with her.
As frustrated as I was with the book during the first half, it really more than made up for it in the second. The characters felt so real and so multi-faceted. You really see the character Therese grow and change throughout her experiences in the novel. She changes and yet remains the same. I appreciate that she was so frustrating at the outset, it offers an interesting glimpse into her psyche. She felt much more human than many of the other literary characters that I have encountered.
i fell asleep in the middle of writing a review last night and honestly that should tell you everything you need to know about this book.
skip this and just watch the film.

A wonderfully told tale of love that surprises and challenges both of the women involved, what I loved most about this novel was the palpably authentic descriptions of the certainty and insecurity, joy and frustration that accompanies falling hard and fast for another person and the difficulties, compromises and growth that result.
A few biographies of Highsmith have come out recently and were covered in the LRB at length. Highsmith for all her talent and success was a recluse and borderline evil person in her private life. Her life was almost as good as a novel and intrigued at her story, having never read any of her works, I picked up this one up. I was not disappointed - Highsmith's prose is so smooth and incisive. She really did have the gift.
