this has been the hardest of highsmith's works to get through but it certainly is the most rewarding i think. i'll have to give it some time and come back and reread it because i definitely missed a lot because this was very introspective and full of metaphors that i'm sure went right over my head.

I enjoyed the book, but I felt like I was expecting more from it. I did enjoyed the extra character development you got in this one verse the movie (which was not a surprise because obviously lol)

I did wish there was more from the romance part of it. Although I did enjoy that overall the book had a happy(ish) ending! There were parts that were a bit frustrating but overall an enjoyable read!

this was better than the film
of course it was more detailed, way more scenes and a lot of the plot was completely different to the films!!
LOVED IT and i fear it was more emotional than the film

Decidedly mediocre story with great writing. The kind of maudlin sapphic period piece (“period” being used very loosely) that I (even as a somewhat maudlin sapphic myself) loathe in books and cinema.

It didn't draw me in, I was rather bored by it to be honest

I thought it was ok. There were some very queer themes that I appreciated, but ultimately had a hard time getting into the main character.

Therese was desperate and almost comically depressed and meek. It was interesting that you can go chapters worth of plot without Therese saying a word out loud and things would just sort of happen around her.

I do think that some of the emotions and fascination that comes with being a baby gay was really expertly captured here. The fact that just a glimpse of recognizing herself really changed her personality for the best (and pretty dramatically at that). Those themes were very honest.

Also, and I mean this with nothing but love, this is quite the UHaul love story! :) the whole love story from conception to end was just a couple of months! Wild haha
