This was not one of the best things I've read by Ursula Le Guin, and at times I struggled to care about the world she had crafted. The story grew on me, and the characters definitely did, but the ending wasn't entirely satisfying, and overall the story didn't have the depth that I've come to expect from her.

Le Guin knew how to tell a story! Not my favourite of hers but definitely a good one. I don't know what else to say...

I was originally only going to give this 2 stars. However, I read the last half all in one go in an attempt to distract myself from something that was worrying me. Not really a fair frame of mind for passing judgement. Still, while beautifully written, it just felt a little slight compared to [b:The Earthsea Trilogy|1170158|The Earthsea Trilogy|Ursula K. This book is not about hope its about enduring. While extremely well written, I had a hard time being drawn into the story and didn't find much redeeming until the very end.

The end did make the journey worth while as did the writing. =)

A powerfully written young adult novel about learning to use the abilities and gifts we have responsibly - to help and not to harm.

On my quest to read everything Ursula K. Le Guin has ever published I came across this trilogy and I need to know how it can be these books are not better known

What a fantastic, beautiful children's/ young adult book and miles ahead of 90% that has been published in that genre in the last years.

NO ONE can do it like her
