Just finished this and although it started slow, it turned out to be excellent! It made me want to go back and reread [b:Gone With the Wind|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283]... or maybe just watch the movie. Two thumbs up.
I think I liked this one a lot better the first time I had read it (which was incidentally, before I read Gone with the Wind). I feel like this book tries to hard to make everyone noble and good, and it definitely tries to hard to wrap up with a happy ending.
So yeah, if you're a fan of GWTW, I can see the merits, but think I just wanted more meat on my literary bones.

The thing that you need to remember with this book is that it's not a true sequel to "Gone with the Wind". Mr. McCaig gives his own spin on the characters and what they do, how they react. I enjoy his version of Melanie much better and it was nice to hear more about Scarlett's first two children. I also think that his version of Ashley is more accurate. You get to hear more from characters that are just mentions or supporting characters in GWTW.
I am not sure that I would put this on my list of books to re-read at a later date though, whereas "Gone with the Wind" I've revisited multiple times.

What I loved about this book is that it sticks to Margret Mitchell's take on [b:GONE WITH THE WIND|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283](which the book SCARLETT did not,) and then gives you Rhett's views and what he was feeling about the relationship between him and Scarlett in GWTW.
Who knew he had a deeper character than what we fell in love with in GWTW?
I am going to re read GWTW and Scarlet and than this one again!

Umm...It's...This is certainly a story. I love the insight into Rhett's past, along with the people and events that shaped him into who he is. BUT the author shows a blatant disregard for the original sequel (Scarlett)- yes written by a different person- and I believe this is an err in judgment. One I particularly did not care for. His simplification of Rosemary Butler into a girl and woman recklessly infatuated (like young Scarlett) should be considered an act of "fridging".

I loved this book! The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because of the ending. But, there will probably never be a GWTW book which I will think perfectly concludes GWTW, so it's a good-read overall! (I'm just glad Scarlett and Rhett ended up together!) I loved seeing more of Rhett's POV! I couldn't put this book down (definitely a book I stayed up all night to read!!!!), it's sooooo good! The style of writing was very similar to Margaret Mitchell's, so I didn't feel like I was reading a separate authors work!
In my opinion, "Rhett Butler's People" is better than "Scarlett," because it was a bit more deep and explored ALL of the characters. I also loved this book's suspenseful and page-turning ending! I didn't expect for this book to end surprisingly, but I was happily surprised when it did! I love this book!

is this even a story, or just excepted thoughts at diff moments in the GWTW book? so painful to read.
I just love [b:Gone with the wind|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283] and it was interesting to see more of certain events from another perspective.
Much like the other authorized sequel to Gone with the Wind, Alexandra Ripley's Scarlett, I would classify this book as fairly well-written fan fiction. The author doesn't even bother to describe the familiar characters but relies on the fact that the reader can see them and hear their voices based on Margaret Mitchell's incredible characterization. The new characters that McCaig creates pale in comparison and seem like flimsy extras compared to those created by Mitchell. Some of the attention to detail is lacking and creates inconsistencies between the two books: one of the Tarleton twins comes to visit Scarlett after he would have died at Gettysburg, and Rhett's mother, who comes to Bonnie's funeral in GWTW, predeceases her granddaughter in Rhett Butler's People. Some of the behavior is out of character: Melanie's openly confessing the secrets of her sex life in letters to Rhett's sister is particularly ridiculous. The amount of acceptance that Belle Watling receives from Atlanta society in the end is also unbelievable. While it's fun to speculate about some of the holes that Mitchell leaves in Rhett's backstory and to create an answer to the question she leaves us with -- will Scarlett get Rhett back? -- books like this just emphasize that a novel written like Gone with the Wind is one in a million.
