All 4 stories were good and the afterward does explain why and why I dislike a lot of other books. They don't accurately reflect how people would ACTUALLY behave. SK always does, even when we wish it were otherwise.

Really enjoyed Big Driver and A Good Marriage, which could be the fact that I'm a woman and grew up watching too many Lifetime movies with my mom. Fair Extension had potential but felt underdeveloped and read like a Wikipedia annual summary of world events. 1922 was a grueling and tiresome slog, but had moments of terror- King has a way of describing gore that paints a very clear picture in your mind, you mean to look away, but somehow you lean closer, trying to make sense of what you think you're seeing in the dark.
We get a fantastic look BTS in the Afterward. I love when King shares his inspiration for stories and thoughts on craft.

The fifth star was a thank you for answering my question at the end of the book. It was almost more eerie than all four stories to hear it answered so directly.
I can honestly say he got me. Anger, surprise, revulsion, disappointment, fear and resolution...to a point. I guess the open ended stories are also part of the joy of reading them. They go on in my head. I am being vague to not give anything away.

An enjoyable ear-read. Be ready to get the willies!

As my inaugural Stephen King, it didn't disappoint to say the least. "Full Dark, No Stars" is an exploration into the deeper, darker places in our humanity -- revealing the Man or Woman that lives inside of us, as King put it. With these four short stories, "1922", "Big Driver", "Fair Extension", and "A Good Marriage" he's proven to me why he is the master of the thriller. Highly recommend, especially if you haven't read any Stephen King before.
