This book does not have 544 pages. It is 344 pages. This is a good one!

Even better than the earlier books in the Cork O'Connor series. Krueger is a master character developer--I'm thoroughly enjoying my time with the O'Connor family. These books are far more than "just" mysteries--they're stories about people, and I don't want to miss any of them!

What starts out for Cork as a search and rescue mission for a missing teenage snowmobiler, Charlotte, morphs into a murder investigation once her body is found in the Spring thaw. Cork is not the sheriff and the principal suspect is Solemn, a wild Native American teenager. The sheriff is calling the evidence a slam dunk but Cork is convinced of Solemn’s innocence and his wife, Jo, becomes his defense lawyer.

What ensues is a remarkable story of twists and turns that is not fully resolved until the very end. So many likely suspects whose guilt is “obvious” until it’s not. Cork even gets to go on an investigative trip to Los Angeles.

Cork is the good natured unrelenting seeker of the truth. As usual.

This series just continues to get better. The plot twists and wonder of who did it had me not wanting to put it down. I laughed and cried with this one. The series is quickly turning in to one of my top favorites

I loved this story. After being disappointed by the third novel in this series, I had a break from William Kent Krueger, and Cork O'Connor but I am so glad I returned to them. This story was well paced, well written, great plot and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Shows how police work isn't like it is on the television shows. A lot of hits and misses while following the clues and due diligence. Cork O'Connor is helping his wife defend a young Ojibwe accused of murder. Defnitely not everything is at it first appears and the past gets dredged up.
