I reread this for the "read an old favorite" prompt.  The parts about Elnora going to school and eating delicious lunches and winning over her mother hold up.  For someone who reads a lot of romance, the romance plot was not as interesting to me.

Towards the end, it was hard to tell when they were on Mackinac Island and when they were in Mackinaw City, but it seemed like there were people driving cars on Mackinac Island.  Come on, Gene Stratton-Porter!

Also, there was a lot of "of the time" racism against Native Americans, mostly squeezed in at the end.

Would give this book 4/4.5 stars! Quite an enchanting little story overall. The section around and immediately after her graduation was a little slow for me and a little tedious. But I enjoyed the overall tone and message of the story and was pleasantly surprised by the plot line a few times!

Apologies for this random all over the place review. I'm just trying to get all my thoughts down into something which is sort of coherent. ;)

To tell the truth, I was a bit nervous to read this book. One of my friends (you know who you are ;) ) really loves it, and I obviously didn't want to hate it or anything. Also, it's probably not really my type of book overall .... I will read something of this type once in a while and really enjoy it, but it's not something I primarily read.

That being said, I really loved this! The writing style was perfection. One of my problems with older books is that the writing style tend to be a bit slow or too drawn out and descriptive for me. I like my fast-paced action novels. ;) This obviously wasn't a fast-paced action novel, but eh. It was still quite awesome! It seemed a bit like an Anne of Green Gables book, but ... I don't know, simpler? A little bit faster? Anyway. I really liked that.

Er, let's see. Characters! I really loved all these guys.
~Elnora~
I liked her. She was sweet and nice, but still kind of remotely believable. In some instances a character like Elnora could easily turn out to be a Mary Sue or so sweet and perfect their annoying, but that wasn't the case here! Gene Stratton-Porter managed the characters perfectly, writing them realistically and making you fall in love with the story.

~Elnora's mum~
At the beginning she was kind of messed up. But that didn't really bug me that much. I know she was supposed to appear pretty mean and everything, but eh. I don't know why but that didn't seem super the case, she was still okay.
And then she changes. I think she's pretty cool then too, though like ... I wouldn't have wanted my mum to stop being like this gardener, workin' in the sun person. And I mean, she didn't really, but if you're going to get know dresses and a crazy hair do and peel all your skin off, I wouldn't really want to do all this super heavy dirty work and more. Yup. *snods* I'm nooot even sure if this is accurate. I should have reviewed this right after I read it... -.-
Oh. And I loved how she was super Christian and cool and stuff. Like with what's her face, the girl he was cheating on her with? That was kind of cool. And like that one moth scene where she was all like "Guys. God is awesome and He created this and it's amazing. If you think God doesn't exist, just look at this moth, His creation. If this was chance, then how could this beautiful carefully made thing exist?"

~Billy~
Man. He was so cute and awesome. I loved that little dude. One of the best characters of the book, in my opinion.

~Phillip~
Okay. So, random fact. When they first introduced him, I thought he was bald and had a giant beard. ( like this or something. Yup. Kind scary, right?) I think that was because I read "Bare-headed" and since now we don't normally wear hats all the time like they did back then, my brain kinda took "bare-headed" to mean "bald" and then ... I don't know where the beard came from. Maybe cause Elnora's mum thought he was kinda creepy or something? So anyway, I imagined this slightly older guy, maybe in his late thirties or something, who has bald and had a beard. Yeah .... Then I realized he was the guy on the cover, and had to put that imagine in my head instead.

Overal though, I kinda liked him. The love interests kind of annoy me a bit, normally unless it's like Mr. Darcy or something but he was okay. When he was all moping around and stuff and like "Uuugghhh. Elnora, just marry me already." He got on my nerves but he wasn't too weird so that was okay.

~Edith~
Okay. Edith was ... ridiculous. At the beginging I found her kind of funny because she was so weird, and then I grew super annoyed at her, and ... then I remained annoyed for a long time. And then finally I was kind of proud of her. As proud as someone can be like ... if they have a niece or something who is suuppper annoying, and then your nice turns out kind of nice. That type of proud.
I think Henderson is perfect for her. Like through the entire time they were both introduced I'm like "Dude. That guy is perfect for her." Yep. *snods*

Er ... I feel like I missed a bunch of people I meant to do but eh, I think I'm good.

So. Overall, I'd give this about 4.5 stars. I really liked it, and it was super good, but it wasn't my favorite book ever. I'm just going to post this now. :P

This book was one of my mother's favorite's while she was growing up. She gave it to me one year and it has become one of mine, as well as being a book I plan on passing on to my daughter. Really beautifully writing and still tangible even though it was written in the early 1900s.

Enjoyed this, though I found Elnora frustratingly good at times!

I liked this although it was a little dull in parts. I likely will not read it again but it was nice while it lasted. I did like what’s-his-name for being true to his fiancée even while falling for the other girl...it was surprisingly handled extremely well and it was interesting. That’s the part I remember best (I’m reviewing a few months after I read). The girl making her way through high school, working so hard, and her love for moths were all quite enjoyable. Also her mother’s character arc was good. A good book.
