I like it, albeit a little preachy. But most of Gene Stratton-Porter’s books are that way and are meant to be so—to exalt admirable characters, attitudes, and lifestyles so that the reader should desire to imitate them.

I was excited to find this book at a used book shop. Billed as a "treasured children's classic" I was eagerly anticipating this read.

I did not care for it at all.

Preachy and moralizing it's a wonder I finished it. Maybe this is one of those books that is more palatable as a kid because you are less aware of the subtext? Needless to say I won't be adding this to my library.

This is as close to a perfect story as I could imagine.

Really enjoyed this, despite some heavy handed themes and characterization. I'm a sucker for character driven novels, particularly those also strongly focused on nature. The fact that it was free on my shiny new kindle certainly didn't hurt, either!

I love this book. I still have my mother's copy, published in the 1940s, and will always treasure it. I re-read it regularly.

Loved this spirited, self-reliant heroine. She is full of integrity. I loved how the author made her grapple with some really difficult situations; I was expecting something along the lines of _Pollyanna_ and found something more like _True Grit_. I thought the novel's pacing was a little strange in some parts, but otherwise there's not much to object to. An edifying read.

This was by turns inspiring and a bit of a melodramatic drag.

If you loved Where the Crawdads Sing you will love this book. Such a great book about nature, reconciliation, and love. I loved this book!!
