Girls' Night in: Four Friends Reveal the Secrets of the Ultimate Girls' Night In! by Gemma Barder
rachelb36's review
2.0
It appears that this book is written for girls roughly between the ages of 8 and 12.
Included are 8 "themes" for a party, and quizzes and activities (recipes, hair braiding how-to, secret codes, etc.) that go along with each. The themes are: Movie Marathon, Pamper Party, Book Clubbers, Music Madness, Time to Play, Fashion Fun, Get Crafty, and Top Talent.
A couple issues I have with the book:
- It starts off with a guide to zodiac signs, and then there's a quick graphic showing whether the reader is most likely an introvert or extrovert. Zodiac signs are terribly unreliable (no, you are not exactly like everyone else who was born within a few weeks of you!) and though it could be written off as "just for fun," I would have preferred to see a more accurate personality quiz (i.e., "What kind of friend are you?"). Barder could then have omitted the introvert/extrovert infographic, which seemed like an afterthought anyway.
- There's a reference to Twilight. (I'd never let an 8-year-old read or watch that!)
Though much of the book is cute (and I really loved the illustrations!), I think I'll stick to American Girl in the future.
I received this book free through Goodreads First Reads.
