Oh, how I ran to purchase this book... I very mistakingly thought that this was the exact book that would contain Cardan's letters that Jude had never received. But as it turned out, those letters are printed only in the special B&N edition of "Queen of Nothing" which I consider a huge crime. Thankfully, very kind Tumblr users shared those precious letters with the world, and I shall never be the same.

What about this book? It's a nice and illustrated fable-like snippet of Cardan's POV which is soaked through with the progress of his obsession. It added to a little more of my hate of Locke and Nicasia and gave us a few more sweet Jurdan moments. Was it as engaging as the original trilogy or Cardan's letters? Not really. It's just a nice wholesome bonus to what we already know of Cardan's personality.

“You didn’t hear the story I told,” he goes on. “A shame. It featured a handsome boy with a heart of stone and a natural aptitude for villainy. Everything you could like.”

A series of stories that follow Cardan's journey. It's short but absolutely charming. Imagine reading a fairy tale book for kids, filled with beautiful illustrations and fables, but the protagonist is that super handsome fae you fantasize about.

Quick, cute, and infinitely more focused than [b:The Queen of Nothing|26032912|The Queen of Nothing (The Folk of the Air, #3)|Holly Black|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1553624975l/26032912._SX50_.jpg|45959205], which is hilarious considering this is a collection of loosely-related short stories that jump around in time.

Black's representation of Cardan is certainly much softer than it was in previous novels, including the last, which some readers might find out of character. I'm one of them, honestly, but I wasn't an enormous Cardan fan to begin with, so the change left me largely ambivalent even as I recognized it. The only time it truly bothered me was during the last chapters, when Cardan is in the mortal realm, as I felt his personality veered too dramatically into cutesy.

Overall, though, the tone was consistent and appropriate to the storytelling theme of the book. I enjoyed seeing more of Cardan's backstory with Locke and Nicasia, as well as those rare flashes of early Jude-obsession that were sprinkled so deliciously throughout. Wish there had been a little more, but then again, I'm greedy.

The art was far-and-away the biggest selling point of this collection. Loved it, no complaints. Wish more authors would take the hint of Black and Bardugo and commission artists (or pay fanartists) to provide high-quality renderings of their characters. We as readers eat that shit up.

This was such a cute novella! I loved getting a story from Cardan’s POV. It gave a nice insight into who he is, and I loved that the Troll kept coming back and that he did get to play the hero. I’d love another novella like this someday.
