Story follows 3 women. Eliza and Nella in 1700’s and Caroline in present day. Eliza a young girl who gains an interest in magic. Nella an apothecary who sells remedies and poisons. Caroline a women looking for direction.

Book was slow for a while but got good at the end. Liked the suspense with the police. Also reinforced that men are trash.

Spoiler3.5 stars. I really liked the concept and it was a captivating story. However, I didn’t really like Caroline, but I was glad that she didn’t stay with her husband in the end and followed her dream. I was really worried they would just get back together and “work through it.” Clearly, this wasn’t a love story.

This review contains spoilers! I listened to the audiobook for this one, and the narrator choices were literally perfect! I really enjoyed this book as I’m a huge fan of historical fiction and multi-pov novels. I liked how the author paced back and forth to each timeline and how the events played out. I’m super glad that in the end, James was not forgiven for his infidelity and Caroline files for divorce. I see all too often partners being forgiven for this and, personally, I know I wouldn’t be able to forgive, so seeing that here was fantastic as I was able to relate. Caroline also put herself first (finally!) and began exploring the aspect of doing what she loves. The only thing that could’ve made it better is if Caroline would’ve kept the vial that belonged to Eliza and Nella. I think it would’ve been cool if maybe an epilogue that extended on Caroline’s research along with the preservation of the apothecary would have been nice to see and the vial could’ve been used for the research. Other than that, the story was a fantastic read, and I really enjoyed it.
