Beautiful stories, overlapping in subtle ways. Surprisingly good for discussion, which is not always the case with short stories. I read most and listened to a few. The apple tree story was my favorite. Heartbreaking and perfect.

Best book I’ve read in a very long time. Each story was so interesting, and the characters were so real and so believable and relatable. Absolutely wonderful. I’m a bit sad to leave it.

It has been a long time since I’ve read a short story collection that I loved, but this one warmed my heart. Shattuck’s writing is lyrical and atmospheric, and he crafts a strong sense of place for these New England stories. The structure, which allows for connections between certain stories, was beautifully wrought. Though some of the stories deal with challenging themes, there is an undercurrent of love and hope that almost brought me to tears a few times. I could see rereading this. Loved it.
