Strange the Dreamer

4.3 AVERAGE

I found this book on a TikTok recommendation. Knew nothing about it but what the person said and I decided to read it. I didn’t even read the blurb. I loved it and couldn’t put it down!

I actually really loved all the characters, which is something I don’t say very often. I also really enjoyed the conflict in this book. I always loved the two sides going against each other but there isn’t a clear cut good or bad guy. Strange the Dreamer did that perfectly!

There’s also a romance mixed in? Wasn’t expecting that but loved it. There was also some angst.

I only have ONE negative to say. I listened to the audiobook and before and after parts there would be music playing when the narrator spoke. It was loud and you could barely hear the narrator. This especially sucked when something important was said and the music was what you heard. Some may be fine with this if they listen to graphic audiobooks but it did bug me. The narrator was amazing though!

Pretty conflicted about this one. It’s a gorgeous YA fantasy romance… about genocide.

Brave writing from the author, this book talks about the nature of trauma and grief, about communities tainted by violence and oppression, about rape and murdered children… and all this is presented next to beautiful storytelling, whimsy and world building.

I enjoyed it, but I also found it a bit trite… but maybe a book like this will help someone out there understand the nature of ethnic violence? I’m not sure…

Still one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read.

2.5 stars rounded up because of the beautiful prose.
If I would have been ten years younger I would have probably enjoyed this a lot more. But this book put me off YA fantasy for a while.
The book is structured into four parts. At the beginning, Lazlo, a simple, humble character for which you can't help but root for is introduced. His experiences presented in a candid thone were really enjoyable.
But part two comes with cliche teenager drama. I don't want to develop on this matter as to avoid spoilers, but that, plus the cheesy insta-romance made feel like I am dragging on forever to finish this book.
Mild spoiler ahead.

So even though this book ends with a cliffhanger, I can't be bothered to care about the next book from this duology as Lazlo is no longer the character I enjoyed at the beginning of the book...
Conclusion YA Fantasy Romance is definitely not for me.
