I can’t rate it anything below 3.5*, because it was written BEAUTIFULLY and is inherently a good story. Just… maybe not for me, I found issues with pacing and all the different narrative voices.

Lazlo Strange is an orphan foundling, who tends to the library stacks of his adopted home and dreams: dreams of a legendary city whose very name was removed from mankind's brains by magic. He collects every scrap of knowledge about the lost city, and learns their dead language, and dreams his days away. Until one day a delegation of warriors from the lost city arrives, and asks for volunteers to help them save their city...
Sarai is an orphan with magic, hiding from the world that would kill her. She has a handful of fellow survivors as company, as well as a few ghosts, but she lives in the night, when she can steal into the city and walk in humans' dreams. But what will happen if they ever learn she's there?
A lovely book, with a lot of worldbuilding and character work. There is some horrific trauma and backstory here - be warned for pretty much every major trigger warning except animal harm. But the characters are vibrant, even the antagonists that the reader initially hates. (Note: this only extends to antagonists we actually meet. The dead "gods", with one qualified exception, are truly horrific and irredeemable.)
If I had a quibble, it would be with how much of the book comes to be consumed with the teenage instalove romance. It does make sense as they are both unloved orphans who are fiercely longing for love, and are both dreamers who connect in that way. But it did get a bit old eventually for me personally. Opinions may vary!!
Still, romance aside, this is a great duology and I would be interested if the author expanded it to tell more stories in this universe.

My feelings are so mixed about this story. What a wonderful world the author has created, and a lovable character in Laszlo! I lost interest when it dissolved into a love story suitable for a young adult fiction.
*edit. I've returned to change my rating and review. This book has stuck with me, so much so, that I recommend it to people.
