Strange the Dreamer

4.3 AVERAGE

The book was good, and it definitely deserves four stars, but for me, it didn’t quite reach that. It’s more of a personal feeling.

First off, the concept of 'Weep' as a forgotten city was brilliant, and the protagonist being an INFP really speaks volumes to those familiar with MBTI. He’s not just a librarian—he’s a walking library!

The plot itself is solid. Lazlo is fascinated by this city, and though people mock him for it, dismissing it as 'fantasy' he gets recruited by a group of scholars and explorers to find this legendary place. The adventure is full of magical places and people, including a forbidden love between Lazlo and Sarai, a blue-skinned girl, and an unusual 'non-meeting' meeting of the two. The other characters are intriguing as well.

Lazlo is one of those sensitive, wise male protagonists—intelligent rather than combative (we need more of those in fantasy). Sarai’s character was also very likable, with her thoughtful nature, intelligence, and unique powers.

As for the villain, she’s fantastic. Complex and easy to sympathize with, which, in my opinion, makes her even more terrifying.

However, the plot moves very slowly, so this book might not be for those who prefer a fast-paced narrative, especially given the author's distinct writing style.

The ending of the first book was definitely thrilling, it made me goes 'naaah! why at the very last paragraph!'

this book!! I need more!! LAINI WHERE IS THE REST OF IT. 😭😭😭

Slow plot that was predictable, instalove, and the ending was irritating. It’s getting 3 stars because it was beautifully written, although overly descriptive, and it has a good overall theme.

Above average YA fantasy with echoes of NK Jemisin’s Hundred Thousand Kingdom’s series in terms of fallen gods. Don’t really have much patience for such anymore but its well written and poetic though there is a bit too much unneccesary hiding of the back story from the reader.
