This was so enchanting and fun to read, holy hell. I can't remember the last time the act of reading was just such a pure delight. Laini Taylor's imagination is insane.
There's a lot of things I really liked about this book. The plot, the setting, the call to adventure are fantastic. Even the ending was great!
But my god...the writing. Events take 10 times longer to get on with because of the writing. There's lots of pretty prose, almost an excessive amount of it. Ideas and thoughts are had and re-had dozens of times by different characters. The POV will also shift within a paragraph, which would be fine if the author decided to actually stick with third-person omniscient. But then there would be chapters solely in the POV of one character and I guess all consistency just goes out the window then.
I was the least interested in the romance and thought it was dragged out for far too long. I understand it's importance to the plot, but the author really took her time lingering in the longing and yearning and purple prose, it got tiring pretty fast.
Chapters would also continue in the same scene the last one ended in, which isn't a crime but it is annoying. The story would not suffer from some reasonable time skips, instead of dragging the reader through every second of the characters day.
Most annoying of all is the trend of describing anything with some basic form of "he/she/it's all [adjective], [adjective], [adjective]." Once you notice it, it's impossible to ignore.
All in all, I might pick up the second book somewhere down the line, but not right now. It was good, but it was tiring.

18/27 for my young adult literature class!
The biggest regret of my life is reading this during finals when I cannot pick up the next one.
I mean I could…but my grades would tank lol
