4 and a bit stars.
Okay, so, earlier I was worried about the fact that this was a series (apparently just two books, now that I've read what other people have to say on it). I usually don't do series. I want my stories to be lovingly wrapped up in one telling, not wander on and on without letting the characters rest. But if the sequel is going to be anything like the first one, and if it even begins to answer some of the questions and concerns raised in the last ten or so pages...then I'll pick it up in a heartbeat.
This is such a gorgeous book. The prose and imagery used is just astonishing. I almost have no words for how beautiful it is.
It's definitely an older YA read, being full of insinuations (tho never graphically so) of rapes and violence, and the kisses are, while arguably chaste and never descending below the neck, so sensuous that it's almost like reading about sex. But it's got such warmth to it. It feels so golden and refreshing. It's the lyrical quality that Caravel was so desperately reaching for and so completely missed.
Its villain is genuinely pitiable and horrifying, a creature of vengeance with all love and hope burned out at an impossibly young age. It plays with dreams in a most intricate way, building up its imagery. There is a risk that the secondary characters are lost under the fairy tale icing. It does lag a bit in the middle (as evidenced by how long it took me to read it). There are a few too many character perspectives, some of which are debatably pointless. Despite my few concerns, I find myself fascinated by this universe nevertheless. You should probably just give it a try.
Librarian PoC protagonists for the win, guys.
