I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t stay in it. Might try again another time

I enjoyed some parts of the book! The wordbuilding was very well orchestrated, the concept of two hearts was well-thought (it reminded me of how Philip Pullman sometimes imagines anatomy details in new worlds), the writing was engaging and descriptive. I think this is another book that I am simply not the target audience for, though, the teenage romance section kind of took me out of it, and the intrigue at the end of the story kind of disappeared, when I thought that that was one of the best parts of the storytelling. I don’t think I’ll pick up the sequel.

A very fun fantasy read. I loved the world and the magic, and the story telling was really engaging. All of the characters were so interesting and had good depth.
My main critique was we spent a little too much time in the teen romance land than I personally care for. A lot of gazing into each other's eyes, thinking about how beautiful each other were. Frustrating because there was a really interesting conflict that the story was building up to, and I just wanted more plot and less of the romance! Personal preference though...
This book ended on quite the cliff hanger as well. Personal preference again, but I prefer a little bit more resolution at the end of each book in a series, and I know it can be done well (looking at you Sanderson).

Beautiful; full of such joy and wonder and heartbreak. The characters and the world and the writing are all superb.
Was not in the mood for this type of book. Found it convoluted.
