“Instinct is a marvelous thing. It can neither be explained nor ignored.”

I love a good mystery & Agatha Christie knows how to write mysteries. This is only my second book by Agatha Christie but it was her first published book. Mysterious Affair at Styles was published in 1920 & introduces one of the most famous fictional detectives, the small, fastidious Belgian Hercule Poirot. This story features many of the elements that have become icons of the golden age of detective fiction largely due to Christie’s influence. Set in a large isolated country manner with a half a dozen suspects & of course each of them are keeping secrets. I love a mystery that keeps me guessing & surprisingly… I was surprised at the end. The story is told from the POV of Captain Arthur Hastings. He is clueless about everything & he made me giggle with all of his quirks. If you have never read an Agatha Christie novel this one is a fun place to start.

“If the fact will not fit the theory, let the theory go.”

“You gave too much rein to your imagination. Imagination is a good servant, and a bad master.”

I've listened to my fair share of audiobooks, but Richard Armitage's narration exemplary! I love his voice and look forward to listening to him do the rest of the series.
