If you're reading this review, you've probably already read the 1st 2 books in The Paper Magician series. If you want to finish the series out from there, great! Go for it. Just don't expect anything new.

If you haven't read those two books yet, great. Don't.

From the first 2 books, I knew Ceony was a paper-thin character (really, all the characters are). But I figured I'd give this book a shot β€” see if the author gave her more depth or some humility. Nope. She's even more selfish, self-absorbed, callous, rude, and self-righteous than ever before. The funny thing is, I think the author thinks I'm supposed to find all of that endearing?! Or, like, empowering or whatever? I think she's supposed to be a strong female lead/role model? But I think she's actually just an adult toddler. πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ

If you read for escapism or just a plotline of slow-burn (closed-door) romance, this might be your cup of tea. If you want characters with depth and humanity and compassion, you're reading the wrong books.
