When Cherry is sent by her coworkers to scope out the handsome man who’s appeared in their office building, she certainly isn’t expecting a Scandinavian prince (although, she only comes to know this later, and it’s a rude awakening).  Whip-smart and gorgeous, Cherry is a fat Black British woman with a tight-knit family and a dead-end job.  She immediately captures the attention of Ruben, a bisexual Dane scarred from childhood abuse and a recent betrayal-turned-scandal.  Fast forward to an alleyway tryst broken up by paparazzi, and Cherry finds herself in a fake engagement with a non-disclosure agreement.  This whirlwind romance has an enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity feel and features light domination play—these faux fiancés have to fall in love and save the day somehow!  The audiobook is a lot of fun with accents galore.

It was.. something. I liked the plot okay, but the sex part got a little weird with all the dominance stuff for me personally. I love Cherry. Ruben is a mix damn unlikable and protective/nice. A weird combination but he had a good character arc. Two of the sex scenes lasted four chapters each - interpret that as you will. This book had me thinking “I should probably get to reading more educational literature.” because this was really just pure spice, non existent plot. To take place in a realistic world, it was a tad bit hard to get a grasp on how truly unrealistic the ongoings of this novel were. Finally when there was some developing action with Lydia, the ending was so rushed and everything “resolved” in 2 chapters. I do love Talia Hibbert, but definitely prefer her Brown Sisters series much more.

Read TWs before starting this!

I’ve yet to read a book by Hibbert with a protagonist I didn’t like. Cherry is bold and clever and fun, and I liked her from the beginning. My issue was with the love interest, Ruben, who seemed like a decent guy but inexplicably rubbed me the wrong way. I also wasn’t a big fan of the sex scenes, as he wanted Cherry to submit to him and do as he said. Maybe that’s a form of BDSM? I’m not familiar with any of it. I respect people involved in it, but it’s definitely not my cup of tea. Additionally, it was kind of disappointing to see my two other favorite characters shoved to the back burner in favor of Cherry and Ruben’s romance. Extra half star given because the bonus epilogue—which is available to subscribers of Talia’s online newsletter—was rather cute.

Representation
  • fat Jamaican bisexual protagonist
  • bisexual love interest
  • Jamaican sapphic side character with sickle cell disease
  • Muslim hijabi side character

📚 Y'all, I love Cherry so much! Hibbert is so great at creating women who power their way through the world, but aren't so armored that the book becomes entirely about letting down walls.
📚 Loved the extremely casual bisexual rep - Hibbert is the queen of "everyone's a little queer."
📚 Loved how populated this book felt for being a standalone - Ruben and Cherry had what felt like complete lives and relationships outside of each other.
📚 This book's main drawback for me was that the power/kink stuff felt really undernegotiated - Cherry barely consented to it at the beginning and then didn’t have much of a say in how it proceeded.

I love Talia Hibbert, and I swear that every book I read by her is better than the last. This book had some challenging content, but I love the way Talia handles this. I also loved the resolution.

My favorite thing about Talia's female characters is that they are usually plus-sized, but she never describes them as such. She makes their body shape and curves seems normal because NEWFLASH THEY ARE NORMAL. Her male characters are attracted to her women not despite their body shapes but BECAUSE OF THEIR CURVES. That is a new normal we need to see in books, movies, and on TV. Because being plus sized is normal!
