Pachinko is such a great book and one that I was excited going into and it didn't let me down. It also took place over four generations differently than I thought it would but I enjoyed it even more. The way this story is told between these generations is such an interconnected one that starts and ends with some of the same characters. I also teared up so many times reading this book especially within the first 200 pages. Near the end I didn't feel as connected to the characters but I still wanted to see and know what was going to occur. The ending is also the type I like, it isn't a concrete ending, it just ends. This is also a rather realistic book in the sense of the hardships people go through and the sometimes unhappy, or just mundane endings we all can have, it isn't always happy. I really enjoyed this one and it opened my eyes to a lot, I think the opening line is rather fitting for the rest of the novel.

A fascinating peek into an entire international and intercultural dynamic I had no familiarity with before, though a challenging read give the wide span of time and list of characters it covers.

A beautifully moving story about four generations of a Korean family. They work their way through life, a Japanese society, and constant gender and ethnic bias. "It's a woman's lot to suffer." A story about love, ambition, and loyalty.

It was fascinating to learn so much about Korean history in the 20th century through these four generations - you can tell the author's research was incredibly thorough into really heavy topics. These plot points are often the focus, which can leave some storylines feeling a little disconnected, but I wasn't that bothered by it because the characters were still so well written - Sunja in particular was inspirational. Even though the overall tone was sad due to so much suffering, there was still a lot of love and hope.

A heart-wrenching story about war, suffering and social injustice. I am left with some questions about certain people and how their lives (may have) ended, but that’s just like real life, isn’t it?

The research it took to create this book and incorporate so many interesting characters into the story much have been tremendous, and I’m grateful to have learnt so much about history through this work of literary fiction. I had never considered the world wars through a non-Western lens before, so this was an eye-opening reading experience.

Lives up to the hype. Masterful storytelling, heartbreaking and hopeful.
