This is my first Martin read and I was bored. I don't care for the extremely prolific descriptions, which I've disliked in a few other authors as well. It just felt like half of this was unnecessary.

Fire and Blood. I would have preferred if the book was a POV story instead of a historical account, but it seems like many people have liked the change in writing style.

I read this to hold me over while I wait for ASOIAF #6, with mixed feelings. it's definitely a different style from his other books; instead, it's recounted as a historical tale about a Westerosi civil war from long ago. takes a while to pick up but then gets pretty interesting. all in all, it's a semi quick read if you really need to scratch that ASOIAF itch, but otherwise, feel free to pass. not as good as the dunc and egg series.
