Short but very moving book. I saw the movie years ago but never read the book. Glad I gave it a chance

The setup is good, but it takes Boyne 150 pages to establish it. The writing in this book is very one dimensional - Bruno comes off as demented and perhaps mildly mentally retarded rather than just naive and juvenile. I was interested in reading this book because I heard the movie was great. I imagine they did a much better job fleshing out the two little boys and hanging some meat on this story.
I don't have many words for what this novel means to me.
Books narrated by children have a haunting aspect to them that, emotionally, is hard to swallow. This is no exception.
It's a lot to deal with, but an essential tale that takes something out of you that you didn't even know you had.

I can’t with this book.
The portrayal of German civilians as ignorant of the atrocities at the concentration camps is a harmful simplification and contradicts evidence.

This is a wonderful book. The story is told amazingly, and the ending is very unexpected. It was a good ending.
What really upset me about this book was that the copy i got was like in large print. And somehow I felt stupid while I read the few pages that I did read. Then i read all the bad reviews about it and realized it was going to be one of those little kid books(not literally)that thrives on a "cute" main character. I.E: saying/spelling words wrong, etc. I get it. I mean the boy is eight or something. Fine, I get it. But when concerning the Holocaust, i don't want to read that. It's just a little too...demeaning for those that died. I don't know. Anyway, i don't recommend this book if you're thinking on actually learning something about the Holocaust. It would be a waste of your time.
