I read Night in school so I never read this one or saw the movie and wow I wasn’t expecting it. It’s unique in that it comes from a child’s perspective that is reliant on friendship and fun. It takes such a dramatic turn at the end. And I was not prepared. The last two sentences packed such a punch: “ Of course all this happened a long time ago and nothing like that could ever happen again. Not in this day and age.”

Written from the point of view of the Commandant's young son Bruno at Auschwitz, we can get an understanding that not all German's were evil and went along with the war or the persecution of the Jews.  In fact, I think the point is that many didn't know or understand what was happening. Bruno's ignorance is both real and a defense mechanism.  He can't quite believe what he sees because to do so would tear his world apart. This book is not graphic - it can be read by the young just as The Diary of Anne Frank can be.  I was able to finished this book in one evening.
