This is a brilliant, heartbreaking fable, in which we view the Holocaust through the eyes of ignorant, childish innocence. It doesn't make sense...but should it, really? This is a must-read for everyone.

This book felt like an insult to what the Holocaust actually was.

Bruno is a really naive and unrealistic character. It is not believable that he would not have more knowledge of what is going on in the world at 9 years of age. That he would have no idea of what the Nazis did to Jews and other groups makes no sense, especially since his dad is supposed to be a commander. It would be more likely that he heard a lot about it in school and at home.

Forgetting the unbelievable part of him meeting a boy the same age through a fence in a concentration camp without anyone ever noticing, the entire friendship with Shmuel is quite bad. Bruno has no concept of suffering and the way he talks to Shmuel is actually kind of mean in my eyes (even if it’s not meant to be that).

I know the author states that he wanted to write the book trough the eyes of a naive child. But it takes it too far. A child, especially one of 9 years, is very capable of understanding a lot more of the horrors in the world than Bruno does.

I also don’t appreciate the censorship that is included in the book. Not writing horrible words used or describing abuse is more of a way to gloss over than to actually face the atrocities happening during this time. I feel that is disrespectful to all who experienced it.

Superb writing, pacing, and editing. This was a perfect piece. The story was soul-crushingly sad. To my core. Forever burned into my existence.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE. If you are intimidated by reading The Diary of Anne Frank I highly recommend reading this first to ease into it with a shorter novel.
This book left me sitting and staring at my wall for five minutes after the last page and I honestly had to re-read the last sentence 3 times because it struck me so deeply. Boyne wrote an incredible novel in which the reader sees the Jewish genocide from a child's perspective, but not just any child, the child of a N*zi commander. I think viewing the genocide and displacement from the view of a child reflects so deeply on our culture not just then, but now. Some people in our world choose not to educate themselves on the World War II genocide and the current genocide happening in our world and this willing naivety is similar to that of a child, except in the adult's case it's willing ignorance. This book is so important because it allows us to understand the confusion that shook the masses whilst the war was happening.
I saw the ending coming from a mile away because I came into this novel previously knowing some information, but it still shook me to my core. I absolutely couldn't put this one down and I finished it in a single day. 5/5 stars, you should absolutely read this.
