2007 bookcrossing review:
Not as good as Sophie's World (what an awful thing to start off on!) but still a good read.
This story follows Hans Thomas, a Norwegian lad, and his father - a slightly pompous and alcoholic ex sailor - through Europe on a road trip to Athens in order to beg the mother to come home. On the way, the lad meets a dwarf who gives him a magnifying glass, and later a baker who gievs him a tiny book to read.
Unsurprisingly, there is a lot of phillosophy in here, and the story in the mini book relates and mirrors a lot in the story in the book we're reading and probably in our own lives too. The phillosophical "chats" and lectures between father and son grated a bit to be honest and didn't feel sooo natural, but otherwise it was a good story, quite life-affirming really.

I've read Sophie's World and The Orange Girl before and it somehow gave me a feeling to position this piece in between of them in several aspects.
1) The book contains several stories twisted with each other adding some degree of complexity and challenge to read. Meanwhile I found it necessary for the purpose of Sophie's World, in this case it was a bit unreasonable.
2) Quite many philosophical references (I personally would appreciate even more!), keeping reader inspired and prvoking thoughts in their head. I found the balance between story and information decent, as the intention of the book seems different than the other pieces.
3) As always, putting child as a protagonist is a brilliant move to transfer some philosophical thoughts. I wish all of us not get used to the every day we experience and appreciate how lucky we are to be here!

I've loved this book for nearly 20 years, and every couple of years I find I need to revisit Hans Thomas and the island. Lovely story.
