At the beginning of the novel the characters are just too much. But as the story continues on I like them more. It's a slower laid back story but I enjoyed it well enough.

Once Bez and Makeda got on the boat, all conflict besides their relationship got put on pause, which I didn't like. I was expecting more plot about the heir search, and for them to either arrive in Ibarania much sooner or have more problems getting there.

The ending was very abrupt, and there were a lot of plot threads that weren't tied up fully. Major spoilers on that:

- there was no follow-up on where Makeda's ring came from, who the guy her grandma slept with was, or how her grandma felt about him lying
- we don't get to see Makeda's mom's reaction to not being royalty, or see how the news affects their relationship
- are they just going to let everyone think they're married??
- What happened to Higginshoggins? How exactly was he going to convince people he was heir if he didn't forge DNA results or anything? It didn't really make sense to me.

Overall, I liked the characters, but the story was just okay.

This book was really cute. I loved Beznaria and Makeda. Cole writes characters that are endearing and real, that aren't just the paper cut out heroines you see in a lot of romance novels. Coupled together with the fact that there are so many delicious, well-written tropes in here, the second edition of Runaway Royals was really, really good. The ending felt fast, and left a few ties undone, but I was also very content with it.

This book probably should be 3 stars, but boy does it redeem itself at the end. Most of the choices make sense, and it pays off in a big way.

That said, I wish that my expectations were different. Anastasia and Princess Diaries are not comps here. There is no princess training. The first half is wasted on Makeda being in her own way and the second is more of that, but at least they're on a boat!

Bez is charming and sweet, and thank goodness her motivations are so clear. They needed to be to balance this out and to make the reader understand why she was being so patient with Makeda.

On the whole, I'm glad I read it. This is one of my favorite audiobook narrators, and she delivered once again.
