//Edit: sooooo I forgot to write the review soon after reading and now there's been too many weeks since I've read the book for me to actually manage to write down a proper review. So I'll just make a few bullet points:
- The worldbuilding is interesting, though there seem to be some quite big historical inaccuracies that are there just to create drama in the plot. Without these, the plot would be... very different. Freya wouldn't have nearly as many difficulties in her life.
- The characters are all very flat/black-and-white as clearly good or bad, with one main motivation that drives all their actions.
- Ylva is the most morally gray character who develops most througout the book. Even if she isn't a very likeable character, her multitude of motivations and actual development might make her my favorite character.
- The main characters Freya and the very clearly indicated love interest Bjorn have some interesting moments, but still I wished they would have been more rounded like Ylva. Freya struggles to have any agency over her own life, and i wish to see her grab that more strongly in the sequel. Bjorn drops quite a plot twist about his identity at the end, and the aftermath of that will hopefully cause some interesting ripples in the seas of these vikings.

But then
I am interested in the sequel. I hope Freya puts on her big girl boots and goes to town. Please. I am begging.
I am also still mad and am growing ever more so by the second. Someone deserves a bat.

Very much a romantasy with some excellent banter, which was the best part of the book. I loved the Norse backdrop and how Jensen didn't just use the names of the gods but added a magical twist and kept them the same. My biggest gripe is I didn't find Freya to be super bad ass. She's a strong and capable warrior but she seemed to overly accept shitty things happening to her until the very end. But the romance and BJORN are top tier. This is my first Danielle J. Jensen book, but I think I'll read Bridge Kingdom sooner rather than later because I did enjoy the writing style as I found it approachable, not too 'big words make me sound smart' but everything being well described and not fluffy. I'm hooked on the story and would love the next book NOW.

I disliked both main characters and the book overall was trying too hard to fit certain tropes.

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen is the first book in the Saga of the Unfated series. This story is about Freya who is a Goddess Blessed fisher man's wife in an unwanted marriage. After her fisher man husband breaks faith with Freya and betrays her to the local Jarl, the local Jarl orders her to fight his son, Bjorn, to the death. Secretly, Freya has the blood of a Goddess on her side, that helps her survive the fight. Soon after she gets the news that she is the shield maiden that is supposed to make this particular Jarl, the King. That was foreseen in a prophecy. The Jarl then forces Freya to bind herself to him and thus begins the saga of Freya learning how to fight and tame her magic. Will she be able to ignore the lingering lust she feels for the Jarl's son?
This book had interesting parts, but it did not do a good job of keeping my attention throughout the book. I had such high hopes for this book. Mostly because it's so highly rated amongst my peers but also because the beginning of the story was really good so I expected the action and the overall story to keep up a good pace. The first 25% was interesting, the next 50% really dragged on and was boring, and the last 25% had everything thrown in there, in an exciting way (spicy scenes, action, fighting, surprises, secrets, and a cliff hanger.)
There was one spicy scene
Overall, I had high expectations going into this book but it was just okay. The beginning and the ending were very exciting, but the middle of the book was really boring. I'm giving this 3 out of 5 stars.
