I loved this book as reclaiming the women’s side of the story! The parallels of stories from different cultures and areas of the world and their histories were fantastic. I now need to learn more about some of these incredible women featured.

Put it down and don' t feel like picking it back up

I’m a fan of the Reading Glasses podcast which the author is a co-host of so I was excited to check out her work. she mentioned on the podcast the incredible amount of research she did for this book. I have a lot of respect for the way she was able to put together such a thorough history of women and alcohol. I also learned a lot in general about alcohol production from early human history to now. I often tell people the disgusting but interesting tidbit about how women used to chew the rice and spit it out into a wooden tub for fermenting to make sake in Japan.

I actually first bought this book at an author event in Ojai at Bart’s Books back in 2021 (I think). I picked it up and put it down many times as I do with most nonfiction. my only issue with this book is I’m not a huge fan of the writing style. I understand the author has a similar style to Mary Roach with numerous footnotes and quirky asides. sometimes I can enjoy that but it got a bit much for me. also the way the “story” was constructed could be confusing sometimes with the jumps from place to place and the seemingly chunk paragraph method intros and outros. overall I think this book is worth a read if you enjoy micro histories. I now have a huge list of alcohol brands I want to try lol
