I've discovered that dark fantasy is absolutely not my cup of tea. I'm an optimist, and reading nihilist points of view is exhausting and rather bleak. I also think Weeks crammed way too much plot into what could have been a taut and interesting thriller. Instead, we get lovesick teenagers and magic and international intrigue and double-crossing and a ton of archetypal characters that is just a little TOO MUCH for me. I'm glad to have been given this book for a Cannonball book exchange, and I'm glad I gave this a try. And now I know that Brent Weeks and I do not belong to the same tribe.

Meh, this is a pretty confused book. It has a tendency to introduce characters and then drop them for a hundred pages or so. Even in the main story line the chronology will jump a few years from one paragraph/section to the next. The writing is sloppy and a bit juvenile and the characters are unattractive and pretty flat. Maybe a better of more experience author would have done a better job of telling this story, but I found it difficult to follow the story when all of these other issues were distracting me.
