I liked it. I think the people here leaving such long negative reviews are too haughty lol. It’s fun to just.. enjoy a book sometimes. I liked the characters and the setting and plot, and i’m excited to start the next one! if you need your books to be perfect don’t read an authors first published work ☺️

A coworker loaned me this book with his recommendation.

This is your typical assassin with a heart story. There is an element of magic thrown in, a dash of destiny, and just a hint of enduring love. It was interesting enough that I wanted to finish the book, but not interesting enough to want to read the sequels.

If you're a fan of this story type, I would recommend it.

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

just strange vibes and seemed very much depressing with no chance for improvement

Wow this book is amazing. I'm actually kind of at a loss for words at how much some of this resonates with me and how incredibly it's woven together.

The only problem I had was that some parts of it got so complex that it was difficult to follow or understand exactly what was being alluded to, but that didn't hurt the quality much for me at all.

This has my attention. I'm very excited to continue the series.

Hmmm, what do I think? I think the story was really good, I think that Brent Weeks has some really sold storytelling / writing skills. However, something felt seriously lacking for me; I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I read this review

Apart from the overly relying on fantasy tropes, I didn't really mind up until the epilogue, there is almost no character building. All characters are more or less the exact same at the end of the story as they are at the start. There is a very small arc at the start when Azoth goes from "innocent kid" to "avenger" when he kills Rat, and there is Durzo that gets some paternal feelings for his boy apprentice, but other than that it's just bland.

The thing that bugged me while reading was the lack of a connection with any of the characters. I mean, the story is really good (maybe a bit stereotype, but that's ok sometimes), the setup is good, the writing style brings things to life, but without a link to the character, in the end, it's just words.

I still enjoyed it and I think that's because the story was interesting enough to make me continue with part 2.
