Loved it! The tension in this novel didn't really drop below a 7 or 8 out of 10 the entire time which made it very fast paced, but overwhelming at times. Weeks does not hold back in brutalizing his characters and allowing them grow through adversity! Can't wait to pick up book's two and three!!

This is a trilogy I'd been meaning to dive into for a few years now with all the comparisons I'd seen to author series/authors I enjoy. I've had a soft spot in my heart for assassin stories ever since I first read The Legend of Nightfall back in the 90s so this was a no-brainer for me to finally read.

This definitely is reminiscent of authors like George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie in terms of the feel of the world--things are pretty grim and gritty, and there's a feeling that no one is safe at any point of the narrative. I also felt like the dual narrative (there were more perspectives but there definitely was a focus on Kylar and and Durzo as the central characters) added to this nicely.

I definitely was getting the first novel vibes off this during various bits. There were plot points that kind of just popped up out of nowhere, or just moments of "wait, what, where did that even come from?" that just made me laugh a little. These moments were easy to forgive, though, as overall this was a super fun read and I'll be happy to pick up the rest of this.

Great story and characters, a little too dark at times, and the pacing could have been a touch better.

3.5 stars. I found this entertaining, and not difficult to read, but although it had potential, there was a spark missing. I think the romance (while important but not the main focus of the story) wasn't terribly believable and stopped it from hitting the next level. The plot was fine, the characters were good, but I didn't feel any anguish or tension that I get from my favourite books.

I will read the next one to find out what happens, so I made it 4 stars - it's not great, but it's one of the better ones I've read so far this year.

It was good in that I cared about the protagonist and a few other key characters. The amount of cruel and evil killing was off-putting though. Some of the twists it the book felt like they were there just for the sake of putting in a twist and didn't feel like they added anything to the story. Then there were some other characters (mage, sword master, prophet) that didn't have enough development.

This is a long book that jumps around some throughout. A lot of the time the jumping around is confusing, but it ends up coming together very nicely. I think that the first book was just the mandatory back story to understand the next two books(not 100% on that since i just started the 2nd book). Overall though i think it is a great read especially with how amazing the end of the book is.
